Van 22 t/m 24 maart 2024 vindt voor de derde keer het Media Arts Festival Arnhem (MAFA) plaats. Een weekend met filmprogramma’s, presentaties, performances, experimenten, workshops en gesprekken met makers in Focus Filmtheater rond het thema ‘LESS’, oftewel ‘minder’. Video- en mediakunstenaars en studenten van ArtEZ Academie voor Art & Design laten tijdens dit festival zien wat ‘minder’ inhoudt. Voor de kunsten, de maatschappij en de aarde.
Het programma wordt gecureerd door belit sağ, Donna Verheijden en Sanneke Huisman. Onderdeel van het festival is een tentoonstelling in Museum Arnhem van twee weken, eveneens in maart 2024, met mediakunst van onder anderen Abner Preis, Donna Verheijden, Samantha Nye en Lydia Schouten.

The Media Arts Festival Arnhem (MAFA) will take place for the third time from March 22 to 24, 2024. A weekend filled with film programs, presentations, performances, experiments, workshops and conversations with artists in Focus Filmtheater around the theme ‘LESS’. During this festival video and media artists and students from ArtEZ Academy for Art & Design show what ‘less’ means. For the arts, society and the earth.
The program is curated by belit sağ, Donna Verheijden and Sanneke Huisman. Part of the festival is a two-week exhibition in Museum Arnhem, also in March 2024, with media art by Abner Preis, Donna Verheijden, Samantha Nye and Lydia Schouten, among others.

Thema: LESS
De derde editie van Media Art Festival Arnhem staat in het teken van minder: LESS. Hoe te leven in een wereld van (ecologische) tekorten en een snel achteruit hollende biodiversiteit aan de ene kant, en een overvloed aan technologische middelen aan de andere kant? In tijden van crisis is minder een schrikbeeld: minder financiële middelen, minder bronnen, minder ruimte, minder zuurstof. Maar minder van iets, is vaak meer van iets anders – of meer voor iemand anders. Minder uitstoot zorgt voor meer schone lucht. Wie minder ziet, hoort meer. Soms is het fijn om minder te hebben, vooral wanneer we overspoeld worden door mediabeelden en meningen. Een eenvoudiger politiek verhaal kan dan een zegen zijn, omdat het ons naar de essentie brengt en de overheersende standpunten doorbreekt. Less is more.
Tijdens het festival in Focus Filmtheater en de tentoonstelling van twee weken in Museum Arnhem tonen video- en mediakunstenaars en studenten van ArtEZ Academie voor Art & Design een rijke schakering aan minder.

The third edition of Media Art Festival Arnhem is all about less. How to live in a world of (ecological) shortages and rapidly declining biodiversity on the one hand, and an abundance of technological resources on the other? In times of crisis, less is scary: fewer financial resources, fewer resources, less space, less oxygen. But less of something is often more of something else – or more for someone else. Fewer emissions mean more clean air. Those who see less, hear more. Sometimes it’s nice to have less, especially when we’re inundated with media images and opinions. A simpler political story can then be a blessing, because it brings us to the essence and breaks through the dominant views.
During the three-day festival in Focus Filmtheater and a two-week exhibition in Museum Arnhem, a program of film programs, presentations, performances, experiments and workshops presents a rich variety of less.
